A cocktail of Covid 19 and the International break is playing havoc with Neil Lennon’s preparation for the top of the table clash next weekend against the Rangers. Nir Bitton is the latest player to test positive on international duty with Israel.

Earlier in the week Odsonne Edouard tested positive while away with the French under 21 team with Ryan Christie also having to self isolate because he came into close contact with former Celtic player Stuart Armstrong who tested positive in the Scotland’s teams base.

Not ideal preparation as the virus continues to spread throughout the World and with no vaccine in sight we are now trying to juggle living with Covid 19 and trying to get back to some sort of normality without spreading the virus even more.

Celtic fans in Glasgow and Ireland were looking to forward to watching the game in a pub after the realism hit home that we won’t be back at Celtic Park soon but that has been dashed by the closure of bars and restaurants as measures are once again ramped up in the fight to contain the virus.

Each day now will be worrying as we built up to the big game with the thought of more pull outs of the team as players remain away representing their respective countries. There have been a section of the Celtic support who have been unhappy with Neil Lennon and his rotation of the squad, maybe now they might think that a positive as we go into the game without key players to start or add strength to the bench. The more game time the whole squad has the better in these worrying times.

Celtic Soul with David Potter

Celtic historian and author of 30 books on Celtic, David Potter joined me today on the Celtic Soul Podcast. His knowledge of Celtic is second to none. It was a pleasure to chat to David and thank him for his contribution to More than 90 Minutes over many years and in more recent years his contribution to this website.

It was interesting to hear him speak about so many famous Celtic players, managers and games throughout Celtic’s history including last nights game. From the Protestant faith like many Celtic fans, David speaks about sectarianism and why he follows Celtic, a love of Celtic handed down through from his grandfather.

He recalls his student days when Celtic won the European Cup and what was going on across Glasgow and even in the Middle East at that time. He also delves into what went wrong when Celtic failed to do 10IAR back in the seventies as the current team continue their assault to become history makers.

Celtic Park – Life after Lockdown

We are all missing Celtic Park so it was great to catch up with Celtic SLO, John Paul Taylor today when he joined me on the Celtic Soul Podcast. JP explained what life is like at the stadium since lockdown

He quashed all rumors that Paul the Tim had hidden in the boot of his car to Dingwall for the Ross County game when he travelled up to look at how the club had dealt with letting 300 fans inside the stadium and reports have also come back to HQ that the Tim was on checkout duty that day in Asda but the jury is still out as he has not been seen in a selfie since Paris!

We chatted about last night’s game and the home fans presence behind the goals on open top double decker buses, a whole new match day experience for the players, dealing with the fall out of Covid 19 regarding season tickets, the virtual ticket to watch online and finding out that the Rangers game was off and the prospect of fans returning to stadiums.

We also spoke about JP’s love of Celtic, his love for the big European nights which he has attended since the 1970’s and even a love of Jazz and his George McCluskey Badge.

Celtic Away Days – Football without Fans – The New Norm

The Celtic players went off to Riga for the Europa League qualifier, if you took a quick look on Celtic’s twitter account yesterday you will see a few snaps of the players arriving in Glasgow airport all masked up and ready to go, as usual Scott Brown looking sharp and fit in his short sleeve as the mild weather continues.

Under normal circumstances Celtic fans would have been checking in yestessterday and this morning on social media in different airports, the lucky ones who booked direct flights to Latvia before the airlines sky-rocketed the prices would be boasting of how cheap they got their flight for because they took the chance and booked early.  For others it would be the usual tale of trains, planes and automobiles. Away Days always make great viewing on social media even for Celtic fans who are not travelling.

Over the years I have met so many Celtic fans on these trips from here, there and every-where. The buzz of having a ticket, a chance to enjoy a new culture, hooking up with old mates and making new ones never gets tired. A new city to explore, new foods and drinks and there is always a bottle of Buckfast to be seen in a square or a park on match day.

Covid 19 has really affected our daily life and part of that daily life is the football and in our case Celtic. With increased cases of the virus on a daily basis now it seems that we are further away from returning to watch football in stadiums than ever with the little hope we had after the recent Ross County game in Dingwall disappearing with every government statement uttered. A couple of hundred fans were allowed in. A step in the right direction but it gave us false hope.

The late great, Jock Stein once said the “Football without the fans is nothing” and those words are written on the large granite box that his statue stands on outside Celtic Park. Match day is just not the same for me, walking across the sitting room to switch on the TV can’t match walking up the Paradise Way or booking a table in a local pub for a social distance pint while watching the game just can’t match what we would be experiencing if we took our place in the stand in any away ground in Scotland or across Europe.

I feel like an old man continuously reminiscing at the end of a long life about times gone by every time a memory pops up on Face Book yesterday morning it was Ibrox 3 years ago. I think about how good we had it win, lose or draw.

I was dead against football behind closed doors when the idea was mooted back in the early days of the pandemic but as the situation drags on with so much doom and gloom, I now look forward to sitting on the sofa with Henrik my dog for company. Social media or a WhatsApp group will never replace social interaction with your mates on match day but that is the closest we are getting to standing on a terrace with like minded people for 90 minutes and beyond.

I saw a tweet the other day “ Football without Fans is better than nothing” and I think I am coming around to this thought myself when I consider the lengths I will go to watch a game on TV when the TV companies seem to have a piece of the coverage pie. I complain but I still pay so maybe I am part of the problem but the problem is I just want to see the Celtic.Today I will watch the game on Premier sports as they take their turn on the TV coverage merry go round.

Paul deserves his place in Celtic’s greatest ever team – Willie McStay

In the second part of my conversation with Willie McStay for the Celtic Soul Podcast. Willie chats about the McStay connection with Celtic and his late father John, scouting and reporting back on Kieran Tierney and David Turnbull and on finding his notebooks with his notes on both players.

Willie also talks about how proud his Dad was of Willie and his brothers Paul and Raymond signing for Celtic before Raymond moved down South to play and how loyal Paul was to Celtic how good he was in competitive games and on the training pitch.

Willie also mentions his son John and his current role with the Celtic underage system before he chatted about signing for Celtic on an S form. before joining the ground staff with Charlie Nicholas and starting to train with the first team and also being star struck meeting the likes of Danny McGrain and making his debut under Billy McNeill.

When Davie Hay came in as manager, Willie became a regular in the Celtic team after his first game under Davie v Brechin and how excited he was when he got a call at home to get his ass to Celtic Park because he was making his debut.  Willie was Man of the Match that afternoon and it secured his place in the 2-1 win over Rangers in the first league game of the season. Both he and Paul played for the first time together in the Celtic first team. A special day.

He also speaks about getting sent off at Ibrox in a 4-4 draw after only 35 minutes, when his old roommate Mo Johnstone scored. It was great to hear how Davie Hay reacted to his sending off at half time and his team talk when they were down to 10 men. Inspirational.

Celtic would go onto win the league at Love Street on that famous day and the team would still be celebrating at Willie’s wedding a week later. Willie also mentions how hard it was to leave Celtic for Huddersfield where he broke his ankle before kicking a ball for his new team.

FANZINE – More than 90 Minutes Issue 110

 

19 years on from the fanzine went on sale at Celtic Park I would like to give a Big shout out to everybody who contributed, sponsored, sold or bought a copy of the publication. It really has been a brilliant journey we have all been on. The way we consume our media has changed so much over the years and it is testimony to the quality of writers we have that we have been able to continue in print format at a time when the print industry is on its knees.

Celtic should be too good for a struggling Livingston side

Celtic have the chance to go top of the table if they beat Livingston at Celtic Park this afternoon. Albeit on goal difference until Hibs play Rangers tomorrow.

After two successful away wins in the league, Celtic take on a Livvy side minus Lyndon Dykes, a player who had been a thorn in the side of Celtic recently, Dykes moved to QPR in a £2 million deal a couple of weeks ago. Livingston have not had a great start to the season with one win and a couple of draws leaving them joint bottom of the table with five points.

Neil Lennon switched the defence about for the St Mirren game midweek and could change it again as reports suggest AC Milan are set to offer big money for Kris Ajer, this could see Jullien come back in alongside Shane Duffy. If we get the reported £15 million for Ajer, I for one, believe it is a good deal for the club, too often he makes rash decisions and I feel he thinks he is a better player than what he is.

With Bolingoli now, thankfully, away from the club, for a year at least following his loan spell to Turkey, Celtic are on the look out for a left back, Alfie Doughty from Charlton and Preston’s Ben Davies appear to be the front runners to fill that void.

Celtic should be too good for a struggling Livingston side to set us up for Riga on the Europa League on Thursday.

Mick Kane hails from Glasgow. He has been hooked on Celtic since he went to his first game when he was 7. Celtic beat Hamilton 8-3 at Celtic Park on the 3rd of January 1987. His favourite player at the time, Brian McClair scored four goals.

He started going regular as a 16 year old when Celtic played at Hampden for the season, being a Southsider it meant a short train journey to get to Hampden. From then he has had a season ticket travelled around Europe for games as Celtic became the dominant force in Scottish football again. A nice change from growing up during Rangers run to 9 in a row.

In Conversation – Willie McStay opens his Celtic Soul

Willie McStay joined me on the Celtic Soul Podcast today to chat about life and all things Celtic. The conversation flowed as Willie talked about his playing career, the McStay Celtic connections, the current Celtic team and his time as a coach producing the next generation of Celtic players which continues today with his work in the scouting and recruitment department at Celtic.

Shane Duffy has impressed him since he arrived on and off the pitch and he describes this season as a special one for the Derry man to arrive. Another player from the current crop he spoke about was Scott Brown who may not have come through the Celtic Youth System but Willie worked with him during his time with the Scottish underage squads.

Willie’s expert knowledge on Youth development and scouting for the Celtic academy is second to none. It was great to hear how the system works from 8 years old players and how they move through the age groups and onwards to the first team or if not Celtic that they have a great foundation to move on and have a successful career elsewhere.

He also shared stories of the youth players who became household names and played at the top level with Celtic including 21 players who played in the Champions League. He also fondly remembers David Marshall coming off the bench in Barcelona and tells a tale about a night out with all the players in Glasgow and how he burst Charlie Mulgrew’s bubble after Charlie had asked him to name his best 11 he had coached by naming Charlie on the bench much to the rest of the bhoys delight.

He rhymes off numerous players who came through the Celtic Youth System and he is modest about his contribution and puts it down to a team effort and Tommy Burns gets a mention as he talks about his contribution to the club.

Back the Bhoys & Keep the Faith

On Wednesday night we saw St. Mirren park the bus and Celtic secure another 3 points at another empty stadium. Celtic came from a goal down to win 2-1 and narrow the gap at the top of the table to 3 points with a game in hand against Aberdeen and IF we win on Saturday we will go top of the table with the rangers not playing till Sunday after Stevie G masterminded a win against European giants Red Imps.

It was Shane Duffy who was grabbing the headlines again on Wednesday evening. Duffy is handling headers from set pieces like he handled the press at his press conference during the week with ease. We all dream of a team of Shane Duffy’s while Gary Breen just dreams of being noticed again! Shane Duffy will be one of the first names on Stephen Kenny’s team sheet when Ireland manager names his team ahead of traveling to Slovakia next month for the crucial Euro semi-final play-off.

James Forest once again shut up his critics for the time being anyway with a fantastic headed goal. Edouard missed a penalty but all is forgiven because he has hero status, had Ryan Christie stood up to take the penalty and miss I fear it would be a different story with the critics on twitter.

We went behind after 3 minutes and the following morning I saw a tweet from a Celtic fan calling for Lennon’s head if we win or lose the league shortly after we went behind. 3 minutes, 3 f**king minutes with 87 minutes left to play.

I can only imagine that the fan is young and frustrated at not being able to get to games and is taking his frustration out on twitter, maybe if he was at the game he would have turned around and said it to a mate or shouted out aloud in the night air and it would have went unnoticed.

Yes it must be a young fan who only knows success at Celtic because being a Celtic fan now is a lot different than those barren years back in the 1990’s when Rangers were dominating Scottish football and we had the legendary Paul McStay leading us back then on the field. A Celtic man through and through and one of the greatest players to ever grace the Celtic jersey who could have played with any team in the World at any time during his career but he was happy to pull on the hoops jersey when others would have left for riches and success.

Paul stuck with us, the fans stuck with Celtic and have reaped the rewards of loyalty with treble after treble, trophy after trophy and we never went burst in pursuit of becoming the finest team in Scotland and I know you all agree.

Yes it looks like the rangers have improved and seem to have a solid defence but remember Edouard broke their heart before and I expect him and the bhoys to do it again.

Let’s get behind Lenny and the Bhoys until the end of the season and then we can open the debate on how Celtic move forward to qualify for the Champions League until then we must keep the faith and stay faithful through and through.

Green & White on the Greenway – Willie Maley Memorial Group

 

The Newry Willie Maley Memorial Group, are putting their feet down for a sponsored walk “Green and White on the Greenway” which will take place in Newry, Willie Maley’s home town on Sunday at 11am. The popular greenway route is sandwiched between the Newry Canal and Newry River – William Street to Victoria lock.

The surrounding area will be covered in Celtic flags and all members of the walk will be decked out in the famous green and white of our beloved club.

Celtic songs, smoke bombs and a drone will be filling the air and young and old will get the chance to have a photo with the “big cup” as the European Cup will be present.

All in all the group have received phenomenal support so far (Just over 6 weeks since they made the group public) and they hope that this wave of support will continue as they strive to ensure that they provide a worthwhile memorial to “Mr Celtic”.

They really appreciate all the support offered at the minute and would really appreciate it if their social media handles could be promoted to try and reach out to the global Celtic Family as they attempt to spread the word. (See Twitter & Facebook details below)

They would also really like to thank the phenomenal support received on social media (over 2000 twitter followers in under 6 weeks and hundreds of fans on Facebook) from the Celtic family along with some of the sizeable donations that they have received from the fans locally – namely Lurgan No.1 CSC (£1000) & Banbridge CSC (£240). This has prompted a real wave of enthusiasm for the Celtic fans for this coming Sunday.
