We are delighted to annouce the second Celtic Player who will be joining us in Thailand for the Celtic Supporters Festival. Bobby Petta will be joining his former team mate at Paradise Didier Agathe.

Bobby and Didier will be forever remembered for that famous victory in Amsterdam when Celtic beat Ajax 3-1 with both players scoring on that famous night under Martin O’Neill’s guidance in his first Champions League game.

Bobby put one of his best performances for Celtic in the 6-2 win at Celtic Park. So outstanding was Petta’s performance that new Rangers signing Fernando Ricksen was substituted after just 25 minutes.

Roll on next March. The festival kicks off in Bangkok on Friday 10 for 3 days before we head to Pattaya for a week of fun in the Sun. To book Pattaya hotel and to get early bird deal please click link below

Over a decade after CL debut Joe Hart looks forward to European adventure

In a hugely significant week for the club when all eyes were firmly on the Champions’ League group stage draw in Istanbul yesterday.  The prestigious event will see Celtic join the elite clubs from the top leagues in Europe for the first time since season 2017/18 and go up against Real Madrid, RB Leipzig & FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

https://celticfanzine.com/product-category/new-issue/

After the 2-0 victory against Hearts on Sunday,  Ange Postecoglou took some time to reflect on a solid start to the season, look forward to upcoming draw and being tested against the best in Europe.  With automatic qualification for the group stages secured by winning back the Scottish title last season , the boss has welcomed the opportunity to have an extended pre-season to hone in on the teams fitness and to push the squad a little bit harder in training.

Admittedly frustrated at the stop start nature of our performance and the step back from the free flowing football he pushes for on the training pitch, he was pleased the players maintained their focus and discipline to control the match to get the rewards over the 90 minutes.   With both strikers scoring again he knows the benefits of having 2 quality players to call on and with the amount of matches coming up it will mean more game time for our Greek & Japanese goal scorers, although maybe not necessarily on the pitch at the same time.

Hinting at the rebuild already undertaken from the start of last season he has no plans to stand still, driving the club and the signing of Sead Hasabanovic tells us that we are still very much at the start of the journey under the boss.  All with the full support of the board.

Joe Hart echoed the sentiments shared by the manager, acknowledging we played well against Hearts, but maybe didn’t hit the heights of recent weeks.  Although, attacks were  breaking down, “we kept going”.   Enjoying life at Celtic park, being part of a team trying to play the right way Joe is looking forward to another opportunity to play at the highest level in the champions league – it’s  where the club wants to be, it’s where the players want to be.   Over a decade after making his first appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, Joe is focusing on this with the same excitement and determination.

Taking nothing for granted because of the fierce competition for places in the team, the former England stopper knows there are no guarantees and that helps push the players every day in training and on matchday.   This is driven from the top with the manager instilling a belief amongst the players that they can compete against the best if they work together.  This is illustrated best with the options at centre back where competition for places means the work done on the training pitch pays dividends if and when changes are required between Carter-Vickers, Jenz, Starfelt or Welsh.

The players and fans can look forward to more electric nights under the floodlights at Celtic Park and we may well have another new face in the squad to help with the new challenge.

The consistency of Giakoumakis and Kyogo key to Success

Celtic put daylight between themselves and the chasing pack with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hearts last Sunday afternoon at Celtic Park.  Goals from Kyogo and Georgios Giakoumakis secured the 3 points to edge the champions ahead in this seasons title race.  Such was the dominance of the display the visitors failed to register a single shot on target in over 90 minutes of football.

https://celticfanzine.com/product-category/new-issue/

Looking to maintain our 100% winning start to the league campaign, manager Ange Postecoglou  kept faith in the starting eleven who had wiped the floor with Kilmarnock last weekend at Rugby Park.  The continuity within the team select coupled with the flawless start will provide the boss with some comfort in being able to nurse some players back from injury, including Carl Startfelt and Reo Hatate.

Good, quick combinations through a congested midfield helped release Daizen Maeda in the right wing where despite looking like he had been fouled by the covering Hearts defender he delivered a pinpoint cross to countryman Kyogo to slam the ball into the net from 6 yards out.  The first half had a familiar feel to it with Celtic dominating ball and territorial possession however, we were unable to convert that pressure into any more goals in the opening 45 minutes.

The theme of maintaining possession, without really having any cutting in edge in the final third continued into the second half.  Reo Hatate was introduced to try to add an extra spark from midfield and his combination down the left with Jota and Taylor opened up a stuffy Hearts defence only for O’Riley to see his net bound shot saved well by the keeper.

https://celticfanzine.com/product-category/celtic-collectors-badges/

With Celtic still only one goal ahead Hearts did push out more and enjoyed possession in the Celtic half creating a number of openings without ever testing Joe Hart in the Celtic goal.  With almost 90 minutes on the clock tiredness and indiscipline came back to haunt the visitors.  Firstly Cochrane received his second yellow card after a thigh high lunge at Celtic captain Callum McGregor, Sibbick followed his teammate up the tunnel before full time receiving his second yellow card after a silly push in the back of Celtic sub Abada.

With full time approaching Celtic finally secured the 3 points when Giakoumakis finished from inside the 6 yard box.  The consistency of our Greek striker and Kyogo will no doubt give the manager plenty to think about in fitting both players into the system, but with  so many games to be played before the break for the World Cup – both players know they will be getting plenty of game time.

While the performance never had the same sparkle as our road victory over Kilmarnock, the 3 points secured in the east end of Glasgow on Sunday will count the same as we strive to retain our well-earned title from last season.

Next up Dundee United on Sunday

THE IMMORTALS Two Nines

THE IMMORTALS

Two Nines and Other Celtic Stories

By Phillip Vine

The Immortals is a passionate love letter to Celtic FC, by turns ecstatic and distressed, angry and joyous, but always obsessed.

After the disappointment in 2021 of failing to complete the fabled ten-in-a-row league titles, the author took solace in researching causes for celebration from Celtic’s proud past. His starting point was the rallying cry that ‘two nines are better than one’, and the book’s centrepieces are stories of both of Celtic’s nine-in-a-row triumphs.

On his journey he discovered darkness and despair as well as derring-do and delight, the extremes of emotion inevitable in all love affairs. He uncovered the evils of the Irish Holocaust and the poverty of Glasgow’s East End that preceded Celtic’s foundation, the dubious conduct of Celtic’s money-men, as well as the ‘miracles’ of the immortals among the club’s founding fathers, its dynasties, managers and players. The book takes us on a pilgrimage through time with faithful hope for the future.

Read The Immortals and you will discover:

  • How Jock Stein plotted a path away from Celtic mediocrity and created a team of ‘Immortals’ who won the 1967 European Cup and nine league titles in a row
  • The secret of Stein’s genius and the burden of his demons
  • How Stein’s success depended on his friendships with chairman Bob Kelly, assistant Sean Fallon and with bookmaker Tony Queen
  • How Fergus McCann laid the foundations for Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers to lead Celtic to a second, and record-breaking, nine in a row
  • How Lennon, the bravest man in Scotland, led Celtic to a quadruple quadruple
  • How some of Celtic’s founding fathers, the money-men, betrayed the club’s charitable principles, but provided football teams to idolise
  • The historical truths, buried deep along with six million bodies, about the Irish Holocaust, and their relevance to Celtic
  • How the ‘Curse of the Ten’ works for and against Celtic
  • The identity of 135 ‘Immortals’ to sit alongside 135 years of Celtic history
  • A radical prospectus for Celtic’s immediate and long-term future, including how Celtic can become good Europeans

Phillip Vine divides his time between writing fiction and books about sport. He is the author of Visionary: Manchester United, Michael Knighton and the Football Revolution 1989-2019, and has another book, Crossing the Lines: Milestone Moments in Modern Sport, due for release by Pitch. He is currently writing a novel, White Horse, about a group of friends who make a pilgrimage to watch the inaugural FA Cup Final at Wembley in 1923.
