It is all about what Celtic do

It is all about what Celtic do. The Celtic players have no power about what happens at other Scottish grounds. Celtic should have had a comfortable afternoon against Motherwell when you consider the chances they created. They had 16 shots with 6 on targets, 2 hitting the woodwork.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes/

The rangers stay at the top of the SPFL table was short lived after their 4-0 win over 10 man Hearts. Celtic beating Motherwell 2-1 secures top spot for the Hoops once again but Ange Postecoglou will have expected a more polished performance from his players who turned in a Jekyl and Hyde type of performance.

Celtic fans witnessed a tense and sometimes frustrating afternoon at Celtic Park today. A mix of poor finishing and the woodwork and a freak own goal made it tense at times during the 90+ minutes.

Kyogo once again was on hand to open the scoring before that Juranovic own goal. Thankfully Hatate was on hand to bust the net with a wonderful strike. The Japanese star gifted the visitors with a slack back pass which forced Captain Callum McGregor to take one for the team and commit the red card foul.

McGregor will now miss St Johnstone away next weekend but before that it’s an away trip to Germany for the fans to take on RB Leipzig and we will be there to cover another Celtic away day in Europe.

When Saturday Comes – Celtic back at Paradise

The St Mirren game was a strange performance, a flat, uninspiring display. Things you wouldn’t associate with this Celtic team of late. A return to the fast flowing football would be most welcome.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes/

A big concern, given we play RB Leipzig midweek is the news Cameron Carter Vickers will miss out against Motherwell. He was also absent against St Mirren, and proved to be a big miss.

Also out, due to injury, are CCV’s defensive partner, Carl Starfelt and Giorgos Giakoumakis. Stephen Welsh and Moritz JKenz will again be the defensive pairing, as they were against the Buddies.

Ange, in his pre match presser, said, “That’s why we’ve got the squad we have, particularly with our schedule over the next month and a half. We’re going to get niggles and some guys who are sore here and there. That’s why we’ve got the squad we have, to be able to cope with that.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-with-john-hartson-tickets-389659320517

“We’ve known it was going to be like that for a while so you just plan for it. in terms of training and how we built the squad and the way we’ve prepared for what’s 13 games in about 43 days. We’ve been planning for a while and the process is just to look at each game and see how people are from a physical and mental standpoint and make decisions as we go along.”

Motherwell come into the game, sitting 8th in the table. They have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 3. in their last league game they were beaten 3-0 at Fir Park against Hearts. After what had been a decent start to Steven Hammell’s tenure as boss.

When Saturday Comes, Celtic back at Paradise

Mick Kane hails from Glasgow. He has been hooked on Celtic since he went to his first game when he was 7. Celtic beat Hamilton 8-3 at Celtic Park on the 3rd of January 1987. His favourite player at the time, Brian McClair scored four goals.

He started going regular as a 16 year old when Celtic played at Hampden for the season, being a Southsider it meant a short train journey to get to Hampden. From then he has had a season ticket travelled around Europe for games as Celtic became the dominant force in Scottish football again. A nice change from growing up during Rangers run to 9 in a row.

Epic night in the east end of Glasgow

The dust has settled on an epic night in the east end of Glasgow. The footballing eyes of the world were fixed firmly on Celtic Park as the reigning European champions started their defence of the competition they won just over 3 months ago.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes/

A 40 year wait came to an end at 8pm on Tuesday night as Celtic fans got their long awaited wish to face Real Madrid in Europe’s premier club competition. The match was a game of two halves and  in the end a sharp lesson in taking your chances and never allowing yourself to switch off.

Such was the enormity of the match I changed my steadfast routine and left early getting to the stadium a full 2 hours before kick-off. There was a quiet mood around the Celtic Way, the number fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the Celtic players entering the stadium was growing gradually.

Maybe a bit naively I expected huge fan fare as the players made their way from the bus to the front entrance, instead the warm welcome offered on the Celtic Way was in keeping with the teams business like stride to the changing room.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/one-weekend-in-bangkok-with-celtic-legends-and-cult-heroes-tickets-412787487487

I had plans to stay and watch the Real players arrive, but instead made my way to my seat half way up the top tier of the north stand. With only a few other supporters in the stadium, it was a bonus to see the bowl of the arena steadily filling up as the players ran through their warm up.  By the time the Celtic starting eleven disappeared up the tunnel from their warm up the stands were a buzz of expectation and song

If the tifo said “today we dare to win” on Saturday, the feeling at half time against ‘los Blanco’s’ was that we dared to dream.  A pulsating first 45 minutes left the Celtic fans stunned that we weren’t already ahead in the match.

A mix of last gasp defending, poor decision making and the width of the goal frame had kept Celtic from taking the lead.  Not to say Real hadn’t made chances, they had, the battle for supremacy was a frantic end to end swashbuckling duel that helped light up the late autumn Glasgow sky.

When our resistance was finally broken in the second half, it came after we’d passed up another glaring opportunity in front of goal.  Carlo Ancelotti’s team found a way, just like they did last season. From on the ropes to taking the points in a flash.

The spectacle served as a reminder of how far we’ve come in a short space of time. The challenge to the management team and squad now is to maintain that level against the best in Europe and as the manager said give our Champions league fans, a genuine champions league team.

Martin Donaldson is a Glasgow East End Bhoy,  He made my first trip to Celtic Park in 1983 for a 0-0 draw with Brechin City & thankfully that never put him off going back.   He now sits perched high in section 409 of the North Stand with his 2 kids making memories along the Celtic Way.

He loves picking out those matches from yester-year to find out much more about the legendary names & faces that have graced the Celtic Jersey over the years.  He is a keen fundraiser for The Celtic Foundation & The British Heart Foundation as they both strive to  make a difference and to change peoples lives all over the world.

Next Step on our Journey under Ange

With the celebrations from our derby day victory still echoing around Celtic Park, Ange Postecoglou took his seat for his first Champions League pre-match press conference.  A five year absence from Europe’s premier club competition will come to an end tonight when the champions of Scotland take on the reigning European Champions under the lights at Celtic Park.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes/

The 4 nil drubbing of our city rivals unfortunately came at a cost, when our talismanic forward Kyogo had to be substituted in the opening minutes.   The question on everyone’s lips since 12:35 on Saturday was – would the Japanese idol be fit to lead the line on Tuesday night?

The boss delivered the news we’d been waiting for – “…….. he trained this morning, looked ok…….he’s available” now Ange needs to decide whether the free scoring forward will start the match or not come 8pm on Tuesday night.   Less encouraging was the immediate outlook for Carl Startfelt who took a knock on Saturday, with his knee still giving him trouble, it is likely he will be out for a couple of weeks.

Given it’s only been 10 days since the draw was made and the fixtures released, the team have had very little time to drop their guard to look forward to the glamour of an opening night fixture against the most decorated football club in Europe.    Three matches, 17 goals scored and only 1 conceded is a perfect preparation and shows the focus driven by the manager and fed through the team.

https://celticfanzine.com/product-category/celtic-collectors-badges/

I asked the manager when he started to think about the big European match, his response “The words Champions League were banished after the draw…until say 3pm Saturday after the derby – we really had to focus on what’s the next challenge, the next step is the important one.   The results have been great and the performances have got stronger and stronger”.  He continued “you could sense it at training (today) the Champions league balls are there, they (the players) know it’s a different competition’ a different feeling.  From then on that’s when you think about it.”

The footballing philosophy so widely recognised under Ange and the style of play witnessed week in and week out on the pitch over the last year will not be something the boss will be looking to sacrifice too easily.  Always focused on testing players and himself, the application will be no different against Real Madrid, this will be another test to see how far we have come as a team under this exciting style.

Make no mistake about it, expectations are high amongst the Celtic support, our brand of football is exciting, its quick and is backed up by a desire from the players and manager to play the Celtic way.

Tonight will be next step on our journey under Ange and our support is 100% behind our leader.

Matt O’Riley – Anything is Possible.

With only a few players in the current squad having experienced the sparkling atmosphere of playing in a champions league match for the hoops at Celtic Park, the vast majority of the team will have a lot to take in even before a ball is kicked at 8pm on Tuesday night.  The legendary crescendo that welcomes and then drowns out the Champions League anthem has been sadly missing from the east end of Glasgow in recent years, but the opportunity to rekindle those breath-taking nights are back with Real Madrid the visitors to Celtic Park for the first group match of the campaign.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/annual-magazine-subscription/

Speaking to Matt at the Champions League pre-match press conference, I asked him what his message to the sell out crowd would be, “just do what you always do.  The louder the fans are, the easier it is for the team to impose themselves in the game.  When the crowd get going, momentum can shift.   If the fans can repeat the atmosphere from the derby win, we’ll be in a good place”

Like so many of his teammates Matt O’Riley will be making his debut in Europe’s premier club competition.  The Danish under 21s internationalist has made the seamless transition from English league one side Milton Keynes Dons to become an integral part of the Ange Postecoglou revolution.

The chance to play in the champions league is a dream come true for the midfielder and he is excited to get going under the lights in Paradise.   Echoing the sentiments from the manager O’Riley is focused on maintaining the style of play that has served the club so well domestically recently.  Although, there is a recognition that we will need to be at our very best to get something from the match.

There is a belief building amongst this group of players that anything is possible.  Where the desire to work closely with the manager and produce the performance that he pushes for every day is now second nature.  When you listen to the players and manager speaking there is a genuine unity in the group – a collaborative expression of fast flowing football and it’s easy to see why our players buy into the ethos of the manager.

When the referee blows his whistle to start the match, the talking will stop and it will be time for the players to execute the plan worked on the training field, pick up 3 points and impose ourselves on the biggest of stages.  The eyes of world football will be on them and with 60 thousand fans behind the team, anything is possible.

Not long to wait now

Not long to wait now. Celtic in the Champions League for the first time since 2017. Celtic v Real Madrid!

The current Champions League winners come to Glasgow in one of the biggest games we have played in years. Benzema, Modric, Courtois et al. Arguably the biggest club in the world, the most famous, 14 times European champions will be gracing Celtic Park for the first time since a 2-0 loss to Celtic in 1980.

Could we see a repeat of 42 years ago? Ange will certainly believe so. Madrid were beaten by Sheriff 2-1 in the Bernabeu in matchday 2 of last seasons tournament so these sort of results can happen. Celtic need to get back to taking on the European giants and getting results, like we have in the past, no better time to start than taking on Madrid.

Madrid, like Celtic, have won all their league matches so far. They beat Frankfurt to win the UEFA Super Cup, 2-0. They then beat Almeria 2-1 (A), Celta Vigo 4-1 (A), Espanyol 3-1 (A) and then Betis 2-1 in their first home game at the weekend.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes/

Celtic go into the game on a high, with some great performances in the league, culminating in Saturdays 4-0 demolition of the Rangers at Celtic Park. We now have the chance to see how we have progressed against the best.

Earlier in the afternoon Celtic take on Real Madrid in the Youth Champions League, a chance to see some future stars from both teams, especially if you missed out on tickets for the main event in the evening.

Whatever happens at Celtic Park tonight, we know Ange and the players will try and take the game to Madrid, with Ange’s ‘We Never Stop’ motto, we know the Celtic fans will never stop backing them. Hail Hail.

Celtic Park will be Rocking

It’s the first derby of the season and usually the biggest game in the week, not this time, as we have two massive games in the space of four days and Celtic Park will be rocking for both.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes/

Rangers come to Paradise on Saturday and then we entertain Real Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League, they don’t come any bigger than that.

We go into the Rangers game in good form, played five, won five, scored 21 goals with only one conceded. We also knocked Ross County out of the League Cup on Wednesday, 4-1, with pretty much a second string. We are also unbeaten in the last three matches against Rangers, 3-0 at Celtic Park in February, 2-1 at Ibrox in April and then the 1-1 draw near the end of the season.

Rangers come into the game in good form too, with four wins and a draw in the league, they beat Queen of the South 3-1 in the league cup midweek. They have also qualified for the Champions League having knocked out Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium and PSV Eindhoven. As hard as it is to say it, they are a decent team, getting to the Europa League Final last season and then coming through the qualifiers for the Champions League is no easy feat.

Celtic have been well rested this season, with a game a week until we played Ross County on Wednesday, we are coming into a busy period with the Champions League midweek games and then league at the weekend.

We added a new signing on transfer deadline day when we signed defensive midfielder, Oliver Abildgaard on loan from Rubin Kazan. We now have at least two quality players vying for every position and with the amount of games on the horizon all will see plenty of game time.

The team are flying at the minute and I expect three points on Saturday, my only concern is that some players will have their eyes on Tuesday night against Real Madrid. However with Ange as the manager, I’m sure he won’t allow this to be the case.
