Simon Donnelly – Comparisons with Wim Jansen & Ange Posecoglou’s Celtic Teams

Simon Donnelly needs no introduction to Celtic fans and he joins Milish for a chat on the Celtic Soul Podcast as the bhoys preview this Sunday’s big game when Celtic take on the rangers at Celtic Park.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/celtic-soul-badges-multi-pack-3-for-the-price-of-2/

Both bhoys will be inside Celtic Park for kick off . Simon will be on media duties with Celtic TV and Milish will be watching with his mates from the main stand.

During the conversation Simon draws comparisons with the team that stopped Rangers winning 10IAR and the current Celtic team. Both Wim Jansen and Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic Park from Japan with little known about them in coaching terms, both had to bring plenty of new blood into the squads.

In 1997 iconic manager Tommy Burns left and Captain Paul McStay retired after failing to stop Rangers doing 9IAR. Both are Celtic Legends and are still very much in the hearts of all Celtic fans who witnessed their loyalty and love of Celtic

Another pair of Celtic Legends Neil Lennon and Scott Brown both moved on after failing to win the 10IAR last season. Like Wim, Ange introduced a new captain with a history at the club and brought in his own players and is now in the driving seat to repeat the double won by Wim Jansen and his all conquering team who stopped the 10.

Some of the players Wim introduced included player of year Craig Burley, Champions League winner, Paul Lambert, Marc Rieper and the Magnificent 7, Henrik Larsson who Simon played upfront with and he shares how that partnership came about.

Your Support Means We Can Support

Thanks to everyone who bought a copy of issue 120 of More than 90 Minutes Celtic Fanzine. It’s hard to believe the first issue went on sale outside Celtic Park on a sunny afternoon in 2001. With only a handful of print copies left it looks like this issue will be another sell out. The fanzine is also available as a digital download.

https://celticfanzine.com/product-category/new-issue/

Also a big shout out to everybody who came along for our annual Gala Dinner at the No. 10 Hotel in Glasgow your support meant we were able to raise almost £5000 for the Kano Foundation and the Paradise Steps group who do great work in keeping football free for kids (Kano) and feeding children (PS).

We start work on issue 121 once we get back from Celtic Park on Sunday and as always thanks to all those who contribute and sponsor us each month. Some of our sponsors have been with us since issue 1 hit the streets of the East End of Glasgow.

GOAL! Steve Chalmers 26th April 1969

Celtic complete the domestic treble as they thumped their city rivals 4-0 in front of over 130,000 fans at Hampden Park. The 2nd treble in 3 seasons cemented our place as the leading club in the country & Jock Stein as one of the top managers in world football at the time.

With a few big names missing from the starting line-up, Celtic surprisingly were not the clear favourites going into the match. Rangers had crushed Aberdeen 6-1 in the Semi final & with Jinky suspended & John Hughes injured, the media had Rangers edging the final.

In a blistering first half Celtic scored 3 goals with out reply. The first coming from our captain & leader Billy McNeill. After only 3 minutes Celtic took advantage of some poor marking in the box, a corner swung into the box was met perfectly by McNeil as he steered the ball into the corner of the net.

Rangers had chances but Fallon in goal kept Celtic in front. As the match approached half time Celtic scored 2 quickfire goals. Bobby Lennox made it 2-0 when he capitalised on some slack passing in the Rangers Midfield. With the Celtic fans still celebrating the 2nd Goal, George Connelly dispossessed John Greig on the edge of the rangers box, then rounded the keeper to make it 3-0.

With the match over as a contest Celtic continued to attack in the 2nd half, then on 76 minutes Steve Chalmers scored Celtics 4th goal. In a move that started from inside our own 6 yard box, Celtic swept from defence to attack in seconds.

McNeil headed a cross clear & within 4 passes Chalmers found himself in acres of space in the Rangers half, he advanced on the left wing, cutting into the box, bearing down on goal he had support from Lennox & Auld, but with the angle closing Chalmers clipped the ball with the outside of his right foot passed Martin in the Rangers goal & inside his near post.

As the Celtic players & fans celebrated the huge victory the rangers fans made their way for the exit, some trying to enter the field of play.

The cheek of the finish from Chalmers not only showed the confidence in that Celtic teams ability it also showed the gap in quality between both teams in the final.

To win the treble was reward for a fantastic performance, but to secure it so emphatically against our rivals made it more special.

Martin Donaldson is a Glasgow East End Bhoy,  He made my first trip to Celtic Park in 1983 for a 0-0 draw with Brechin City & thankfully that never put him off going back.   He now sits perched high in section 409 of the North Stand with his 2 kids making memories along the Celtic Way.

He loves picking out those matches from yester-year to find out much more about the legendary names & faces that have graced the Celtic Jersey over the years.  He is a keen fundraiser for The Celtic Foundation & The British Heart Foundation as they both strive to  make a difference and to change peoples lives all over the world.

Jota & Kyogo Perfect Partnership for Title Run In

Earlier in the season we witnessed a great partnership forming between Jota and Kyogo. injuries put a stop to that partnership during the season but just as we enter the business end of the season it seems that the duo are ready to rekindle that perfect partnership.

https://celticfanzine.com/product-category/t-shirts/

As we entered the business end of the season after the SPFL split Celtic travelled for a tough game to Dingwall where they were kicked from pillar to post by the home side’s hatchet men but the cream of the crop always rises to the top and on the day it was Jota and his perfect pass into the box saw Kyogo lose his markers and rise high into the air to head the ball home to give Celtic a 1-0 lead.

Jota picked up a man of the match award for his performance, but honorable mentions must go to Tony Ralston and Greg Taylor both full backs put in full shifts again, both players have improved under Ange Postecoglou and let’s hope that form continues when the Rangers come to Celtic Park on Sunday.

The disappointment of the cup semifinal exit at Hampden will be banished if we can wrap up the title and take home the SPFL trophy. Revenge is best served on a Sunday lunchtime. Role on Sunday.

Celtic Soul Podcast Episode 121 – Rangers Preview, Ross County Review & 6-2 Rewind

The buildup to the big game on Sunday has begun ahead of Celtic taking on their newest rivals the Rangers and we are looking forward to the midday kick off when Paradise will be packed to capacity and the atmosphere will be electric.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/more-than-90-minutes-celtic-soul-gift-pack/

Celtic Fanzine Editors Matt McGlone (Alternative View) joins Andrew Milne (More than 90 Minutes) on the Celtic Soul Podcast, Talk from the Terrace as they look ahead to the Glasgow derby and reflect on Celtic’s 2-0 win on the road last Sunday.

The Bhoys also look back at Celtic’s 6-2 victory over Rangers when Martin O’Neill introduced himself to Scottish football on that magnificent day when a natural high engulfed Celtic fans inside Celtic Park and those watching on TV screens throughout the World.

A win on Sunday would certainly give us that kind of natural high once again, that Sunny lunchtime was a special day so let’s hope this Sunday is as beautiful and special as that day back in August 2000.

WE GO AGAIN

It is always a sore one when Celtic lose and even harder when you lose to city rivals the rangers. On Sunday we came off second best against the 13 men of our opposition. Yes, Bobby Madden had a howler again! But in saying that Celtic were not at their very best in a very tight game which could have gone any way.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/thousandsaresailing/

Sunday is gone and another visit to Hampden this season is gone. We have 5 very important games coming up in the run in for the SPFL title and we are in a great position 6 points clear and a far superior goal difference to the chasing pack in blue.

We go again in Dingwall against the ever-improving Ross County on Sunday, and we need to be at our best. Tickets are once again like hens’ teeth and the search continues for one for so many Celtic fans and I’m sure fans will travel without tickets and will stand outside with cash in the air hoping and praying for a spare.

For those not travelling the game will be shown on Sky Sports with a 14:30 kick off. Ross County have also plenty to play for with the fourth European place up for grabs for them to battle it out with Motherwell and Dundee United.

Final Straws, Final Hurrahs

The holiday season kicked off in glorious fashion with an unforgettable win at Hampden and during the celebrations my mind’s eye cast back to previous trips to League Cup Finals. Traditionally the season’s first contested honour, its attendant result can provide an impetus for the campaign ahead and in more recent seasons has illuminated the way towards further cups, titles and records.

https://celticfanzine.com/product/thousandsaresailing/

For Ange and ourselves this latest feat bodes well but of course the post-cup fallout hasn’t always been as we would’ve wished. Curiously my personal League Cup Final lowlight and highlight were both at Ibrox, not Hampden. In fact, these were the only two occasions that Celtic have played for a cup at Poundland. Same venue but in terms of experiences, poles apart.

As bitter disappointments go I can’t recall any as sore or ironically as memorable as the Coca Cola Cup final against Raith Rovers in 1994. A year significant for the dawning of the Fergus McCann era and after three trophyless seasons we all yearned to see his fresh ambition rewarded with returning legend Tommy Burns leading the team to win something, anything. With this in mind, myself and two intrepid comrades took the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and undeterred by the lack of Cup Final tickets, we boarded an overnight train from Liverpool to Glasgow.
