Celtic fans rarely refer to Paul McStay by his name. He was, is and will always be The Maestro. It’s a nickname that acknowledges his extraordinary talent, and the affection with which it is still uttered is in appreciation of the fact that he dedicated his whole playing career to the green and white Hoops. A one man club. Celtic was the only club for him.

When he retired only one man had made more appearances for the club – and that is Cesar himself – and while contemporaries came and went from Celtic Park, Paul McStay remained, staying faithful to the club, particularly in the early 1990s when things were falling apart off the field. It’s something that the Celtic support has never forgotten.

Now Paul McStay tells his story of his life and extraordinary career for the first time in his autobiography and we can not wait to hear him tell his story in person at Rosies from his early life, living in Larkhall and coming through the grassroots football ranks and how he developed as a player and went on to become a Celtic Legend.

Celtic and tonight’s opposition go back a long way to the ‘1968-‘69 season when we were drawn against Ferencvaros. The game came just after the Soviet invasion of the Czech Republic and Celtic said they would boycott the game and then some Eastern bloc teams did similar in protest against the re-drawn tournament.

It became rather farcical then but Celtic chairman Bob Kelly was as principled then as he was when taking on the SFA on over flying the flag of the Irish Republic in the early 1950’s and he stuck to his guns.

In the redrawn European Cup game Celtic beat St. Etienne before losing to AC Milan in the quarter final.

Which Celtic will turn up tonight? There are two scenarios to be played out. Firstly we could defeat the Hungarians and then beat the rangers on Sunday and all will be well in the camp.

The alternative scenario sees us losing tonight and on Sunday in Paradise and then we have a similar scenario to Nancy last season. I hope it pans out in the affirmative and all will be well by Monday.

The Celtic back four are not gelling, the midfield was posted missing last Sunday and the big money double strike force of Hogh and Duran have not been allowed to play together up front.

I never question the manager, he’s a genius but I just hope that the season doesn’t prove to be a step too far for him and he leaves like Neil Lennon did in the Covid season with his reputation tarnished.

Tonight is my first game this season. I left Galway at 1am this morning with partner Mary arriving at Dublin airport at 4am before our flight at 7:40am to Glasgow. I bumped into More than 90 Minutes Editor Andrew waiting for the bus to take us into the city. I will need a little rest before heading for Paradise later this evening.

C’mon the Hoops!

Paddy McMenamin was born in Belfast with Donegal and Tyrone parents. He spent the 1970’s in Long Kesh. He has been going to Paradise since the Benfica game in Nov. 1969. He lived in Donegal for 30 years but now lives in Galway. He returned to University at 50 and became a secondary school teacher of history and English.

Basle knocked Celtic out of the Champions League in the final qualifier which saw Celtic drop into the UEFA Cup.

It was an incredible journey around Europe that season. No trophies were won when that season ended in heartbreak in Seville in the UEFA Cup final followed by losing the league at Rugby Park on goal difference a few days later.

I was on my own, it reminded me of the covid season. Like so many Celtic fans I watched all of that season from the comfort of my home and it would prove to be anything but comfortable to watch.

The same could be said for Celtic’s recent visit to Ibrox it was a gutless performance from the Celtic players. The players were out fought by the home side who took full advantage of there being no Celtic fans at the game and looked to have more hunger about them. Only young Colby Donovan got pass marks on the day, the rest of the Celtic players including the more senior ones who have done it all before looked as if they had only just met each other.

We lavish these players with praise when they perform well and domestically in the league they have a 100% record, we praised them when they beat Lask 3-0 at Celtic Park only for the same players to implode in Austria.

Hopefully the players will have time to reflect and some of them need to grow a set of balls. We chanted bring on the rangers in Perth after the win over St. Johnstone sadly it fell on deaf ears.

 There will have been no rangers fans at Celtic Park on Sunday apart from a couple of rows of them in the directors box and hopefully we are celebrating when the full time whistle blows and can rub it into them.

The rangers were knocked out of two European competitions already so don’t have a midweek game and will come to Celtic Park full of confidence after the League Cup victory.

Martin O’Neill, Shaun Maloney and the Celtic backroom team also need to take a look at the tactics from Ibrox and take responsibility for being out thought by the new rangers manager Derek McInnes. Why was there no plan B?

O’Neill’s team selection raised many eyebrows among the Celtic support when it was announced many Celtic fans and pundits took to social media to express their concerns that Tounekti was selected ahead of Hassan to start. While Johnstone got the nod over Sinisalo in goals but looked nervous throughout the game.

Tounekti’s best work for Celtic has always been coming off the bench I can’t remember him starting a game where he really impressed. He was substituted at half time which summed up his performance. If O’Neill had subbed more players at half time they could have had no complaints. Maybe it is unfair to single out one or two Celtic players when most of them failed to show up.

After the game O’Neill spoke about getting hammered on his first visit to Ibrox 5-1 this came on the back of the 6-2 win over Rangers at Celtic Park earlier in that season during his first stint as manager. I was at both games one filled with joy another with misery.

After that game Rangers never hammered an O’Neill Celtic team again. Most visits to Ibrox with 8,000 fellow Celtic fans were joyous occasions before they pulled the plug on the Celtic fans getting the Broomloan end and killed a part of the Glasgow Derby. Martin O’Neill signed Neil Lennon after that game and he became the anchor in midfield alongside Champions League Winner Paul Lambert. He does not have that luxury now!

Dermot Desmond and the Celtic board must take blame also for gambling once again in the transfer window as usual too little too late. Making money for the shareholders is more important than spending it for the season book holders. The Europa League is a harder ticket sell to fans who remain pissed off with those in charge of the club for their continued failure in the Champions League.

The Celtic players and management can go someway to repairing the damage inflicted in Europe and the League Cup this week by winning in Europe and beating our city rivals in the League.

Its another packed issue full of opinions from our columnists. With the transfer window closed Celtic are out of the Champions League and the League Cup after heavy defeats away from home.

Celtic have dropped into the Europa League after going out in Austria to Lask. They kick off the campaign against Ferencvaros on Thursday Night before a revenge mission on Sunday in the Glasgow Derby after last Sunday’s shambles at Ibrox.

The rangers have more time to prepare for Sundays game after getting knocked out of both the Europa League and Europa Conference early doors. They will cross the city full of confidence but without any of their fans.

Celtic have a 100% home record and sit top of the SPFL. Celtic fans are still frustrated with the Celtic board obsession with banking money instead of getting players deals over the line early in transfer window to give Martin O’Neill the tools he needs.

It could have been all so different if Dermot Desmond and the Celtic board had the same ambition as the Celtic support and brought enough quality players to the club in time to bed in and prepare for the Champions League qualifier. We could have been in Greece to play AEK Athens last night enjoying the sunshine.

Now before the happy clappers have a go at me, the Celtic players do have to take a good look at themselves after surrendering a 4 goal lead to Lask. Poor Celtic Captain, Callum McGregor had to once again apologise to the Celtic fans for failure to qualify for the Champions League when really it should be Dermot Desmond, at the end of the day he is the one micro managing OUR club.

No matter where Celtic play the Celtic support will be there and tonight will be no different. Thankfully St. Johnstone have given us a decent allocation and will make some cash for their club.

For those not attending the game, Sky Sports are showing it!. Enjoy the game and let’s hope St. Mirren can turn over the rangers at Ibrox.
