Celtic Fans Continue Japanese Adventure

Celtic fans continue their Japanese adventure after yesterdays 6-4 defeat to Yokahoma. They will now start make the 500k journey to Osaka on the famous bullet train for the Gamba Game.

Yokohama F. Marinos and Celtic fans had plenty to cheer with the ball hitting the back of the net 10 times. The J. League champions are mid-way through their season and way ahead of the Scottish champions in terms of fitness.

Brendan Rodgers believes it was beneficial for the players, with plenty of positives to reflect on. Speaking to Celtic TV, the Celtic manager said: “It was a tough schedule for us in terms of arriving here so quickly. This is a good team and they are pretty much three-quarters of the way through their season.

“It was perfect for what we needed with the fitness levels we need to be at, and there’s still a lot of work to do on that front. We played two behind closed doors and each game is a step-up in performance levels.

“We can’t lose track of the priority at this stage. You can never go on results and we need to build that fitness and you can see Yokohama were that bit sharper.

‘We will get to that point but we have to focus on our physicality and that will improve over the coming weeks. The main priority was our fitness and we will have benefited tonight.’

“You can see whenever it works well, some of the patterns in penetrating the space in behind to attract opponents out and then counter them with the ball, they did that very well.

“In other moments we were maybe hesitant with the ball and maybe didn’t get our pass away quick enough.

“That’s what pre-season is for. It’s for flushing out all of those mistakes and building your fitness up, and we can build through that over the course of pre-season.”

For those of us not lucky enough to be in Japan. Saturdays game will be shown live on  https://www.celticfc.tv. Kick off is 11:00 (Celtic Park Time & 19:00 Japan Time).

When Saudi Comes they GO – Jota no longer on the wing

We had Jota on the wing, he was a pleasure to watch from the stands. Celtic’s recruitment has been excellent over the past 2 seasons and the Portuguese winger was one of the stand out players alongside Kyogo and Carter Vickers.

One season on loan before he signed a permanent deal. Little did Celtic know then what his sell on value was when he put pen to paper in Glasgow.

When the Saudi offer came in, it was only going to end in one way and that was a flight to the middle east to sign on the dotted line. Financially everyone was a winner, the player and Celtic. As fans we will find another player to sing about.

The money from Saudi may bank roll Celtic’s model in the future (Kyogo and McGregor have already been tied to long term new deals) . The model of buy young, develop the player before selling high has been working over the years. Jota follows players like Dembele and Van Dyke out the exit door from Paradise to richer leagues.

I can’t take credit for research on this blog, that I have to give to James Montague author of The Billionaires Cub: The unstoppable rise of footballs super-rich owners.

James penned an informative article on Saudi Arabia for the excellent When Saturday Comes Magazine which covers football around the globe while retaining it’s fanzine roots and feel.

The Sovereign Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia also known as the Public Investment Fund (PIF) bought 75% shares in four of the countries biggest clubs. Al Hilal, Al Ittihad (Who Jotta signed for alongside Benzima) , Al Nassr (Ronaldo) and Al Ahli.

The fund is worth an estimated £600 Billion + and it’s chairman is Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and was set up to diversify the economy away from oil. Football is just part of the plan. In recent times they have flexed their muscles in the Boxing ring and on the Golf Course.

Saudi money is thought to be behind the push to revolutionise FIFA’s Club World Cup into a global Champions League to rival UEFA’s version. Some even believe that such wealth could buy them a place in the CL. I’m sure they would love to see Saudi teams play alongside their EPL team Newcastle.

Montague writes “The country has undergone something of a cultural revolution. Young people are no longer separated by sex like they were. The hated religious police has been neutered. Woman can now drive and watch football matches in the stadium”

Stuff we have always taken for granted.

He also writes “At the same time Saudi Arabia has doubled down on political repression. Activists who have called for those reforms have been jailed, many simply tweeting about them, In 2022 Saudi Arabia executed 147 people, 81 in a single day”

The Saudi league is flourishing and is now able to attract the best players and managers in the World with the lure of vast amounts of money. When Saudi Comes! they go.

Looking forward to getting back to see Celtic

It’s nice to be back writing about Celtic after the summer break. We look forward to another season following Celtic home and away. Thanks to everyone who bought the latest More than 90 Minutes. The print edition is heading for another sell out with less than 5 copies left as I write. Work will begin soon on issue 128 out early August.

Celtic continue their pre-season build up with some warm weather training before heading off to Japan for two games. Celtic take on Yokahama FM on Wednesday 19 & Gamba Osaka on Saturday 22. The two games have a 7 p.m. kick off local time (11 a.m. Glasgow time) and will be shown on Celtic TV. https://www.celticfc.tv

It should be an amazing experience for the Celtic fans who are travelling from around the globe and Japanese Celtic fan, Nobutaka Yamanaka has been doing a great job keeping everyone who is traveling updated on his Facebook page Celtic Japan Tour 2023. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1210880306467254/

I know a lot of Australian based Celtic fans who are making the trip and I must admit I’m a little jealous after having such a great time with them in Thailand back in March. They still plan on travelling to South Korea to continue their jolly bhoys.

Its’s a pity the Celtic game has been cancelled for those making the long trip but they will have a great time never the less. South Korea’s loss is Ireland’s gain with the Wolves game now switched to Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

Tickets went on pre-sale yesterday and from this morning on general sale via Ticketmaster. Tickets start at €35, €20 for children (Cat. B only) with premium coming in at €85 (excluding booking fees). https://www.ticketmaster.ie/event/18005EEAD8FA68D0

We (St. Margaret’s CSC) will be running a bus from Drogheda & Duleek to the game which kicks off at 2pm. Buses will no doubt be coming over on the ferry from Scotland and supporters clubs from throughout Ireland will make their way to Dublin in the Green.

Celtic fans visiting Dublin should enjoy a great day. In Celtic bars like Peadar Browns and Celtic restaurants like O’Sheas in Temple Bar. Pre-season friendlies are not for everyone but I for one am looking forward to getting back watching Celtic in the flesh.
